THE NATIONAL: TROUBLE WILL FIND ME

GENRE | HEAVYHEARTED MELODICISM
VERDICT | PURCHASE IMMEDIATELY
LABEL | 4AD
RELEASE | 5.20.13
When we last left The National, they were basking in the glow of High Violet, an album of lofty praise and decent sales (in this day and age) that somehow left me cold. How could an album that sounds so much like its wonderful full-length predecessor, Boxer, be so unsatisfying?
Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men, and who knows what pushes the fickle critic’s buttons?
The point is, Trouble Will Find Me is here, and it’s wonderful.
It doesn’t even sound all that different from High Violet, but for some reason it’s infinitely more satisfying.
Everything that The National does well—the layers of guitar, the subtle finger picking, the subdued piano and quiet vocal harmonies along with Matt Berninger’s leads—is here, though drummer Bryan Devendorf’s thunderous drums are quieter than on previous releases. Not to worry: they’re still propulsive.
All the tracks have their charms, but the standout is “Fireproof,” with a well-placed, ominous low chord chiming in each time Berninger sings the phrase, “You’re fireproof,” followed by “Nothing breaks your heart.”
Put on the headphones. Listen to it from start to finish. Let its somber tones wash over you all summer long.

Meganome: A Massive Super-Monome Capable of Jazzy Rhythmic and Melodic Robotic Feats
Minneapolis-based artist Patrick Flanagan is no ordinary drummer or electronic musician. His rig does everything the hard way – and the results are fantastic. With robotic drum kit mechanically playing acoustic drums, his fingers command complex feats of rhythm and melody from an oversized, custom grid controller.
There are idiomatic musical possibilities unlocked by software he’s built in Max/MSP and Java. Repeat increments, of the sort found in drum machines, produce complex rhythmic figuration on multiple drums – partly because, unlike the dumber implementation on drum machines, it’s possible to play multiple repeat increments at the same time. (In other words, you can have one drum playing eights while another plays sixteenths.) In melodies, his layout make big octave jumps easier – think Giant Steps.
Mega, indeed. Apart from using the Arduino mega, Patrick Flanagan’s controller has a big scale and big ambitions. Image courtesy the artist.
Patrick writes with more details:
I just uploaded a demo video for my custom grid-based controller, the Meganome. The design is obviously inspired by the monome, but it departs in a couple ways from the monome and its cousins. I wanted larger buttons with light but solid action for triggering drum hits and synth notes–buttons that are hard to miss and give you a nice “clack” sound when struck. The rectangular arrangement with 14 buttons per row lets me display the entire
chromatic scale plus two notes of overlap when the Meganome is in synth control mode. Like the Push controller in its chromatic mode, the notes of the scale I’m in light up, but unlike the Push, the Meganome lays octaves along its columns, which makes for easy traversal of octave space and wide chord voicings. Triads, on the other hand, are tricky.I did a blog post on difficulties I encountered while building it and posted my Arduino code on my blog:
http://jazarimusic.com/finally-a-diy-midi-controller-with-purpleheart/Finally, you can see the Meganome in action as a robot drum controller in this in-studio performance video [below].
Those of you attempting something similar, you’ve got loads of resources here. LED drivers? Check. Shift registers and encoders? Check. Which parts to use, code downloads, USB MIDI firmware? Roger that. Open source sharing really does accelerate advancements in this space, without question. (Believe me, as we’re using it directly on MeeBlip – both in what we get and what we give away. There are things that wouldn’t have been possible with proprietary tech, especially as you bring together lots of musical and engineering elements.)
He’s also inspired by Christopher Willits’ recent thoughts about the Push controller:
Enjoyed your post on Christopher Willits and Push. I’m going to think about ways I could modify the pitch layout to make performance of tertian harmonies easier. I love octave leaps, but sometimes you want to play a triad. And I believe it’s worth thinking about how these grid layouts does relate or could relate to Riemannian Tonnetz; the similarity is too striking to overlook. It’s interesting to see how these obscure academic theories of harmony get incorporated into mass market products decades or centuries after their appearance.
But whether it’s the geeky or – as he hints in the video, the emotional – that attract you, or a combination of both, you’ll find lots more on his site.
And in the meantime, imagine frenetic marching, dancing robots, and you start to get the feel for this via the music samples below – imagining a revolutionary game universe for this, somehow.
Or maybe it’s a future-punk jam band.
Or maybe it’s Afro-Baroque-Electro-Robot Erik Satie in a Djembe Drum. (His description.)

INTERVIEW: COLOR CHANNEL

Photo + video by Eye Design
I have a theory that if a band puts on an amazing live show it’s probably because the members of the group all like each other. And Color Channel—a band whose live shows are some of the most high-energy, electrified experiences you can have in Boston right now—really, really like each other.
I met up with them at their practice house in Allston the night before they released their first “officially” (their description) recorded EP, March’s Pyramid of Love. They were understandably anxious but contagiously upbeat,
and what was supposed to be a 15-minute interview had me leaving with over an hour of bizarre, ridiculous interview audio and some tearful group hugs (boxed red wine was involved).
But I digress: the six members of Color Channel really like each other.
“One of the original mottos for the band is, ‘Play less for the greater whole of the band,’” said guitarist Mat DelloRusso of how they keep their positive energy. “A lot of discrepancies come down to that, ‘Oh, I’ll just kind of quiet down ’cause it sounds better. Or whatever it is.”
“It’s hard with six people to keep the cohesive vibe,” added bassist Nate Jeffery.
“We actually have a little purple square that we hang up in the room–” synth-player/bassist Andrew Hoffman began, before the rest of the band burst out laughing and he had to wait for them to calm down,
“–that’s supposed to represent, ‘When you come in here, we’re all having fun but we’re all serious, and trying to create stuff. But we’re not trying to squabble so leave the arguments at the door.’”
It’s a little bit hard to describe Color Channel’s sound. They’re poppy but introspective, energetic and still somehow thoughtful. The five tracks on Pyramid of Love (the release of which drummer Dylan Larkin compared to “watching your child go off to college”) have been mixed and recorded over the course of several years, some even before lead vocalist Jessica Simes’s entrance into the band. The songs are synth-heavy and a tad psychedelic, while the harmonies that the other synth-player/bassist/vocalist Jay Thomas creates with Simes are spacey and textured. Even the band thinks their sound is hard to pin down. Their Bandcamp page describes Pyramid as “electronic ghost-wave dance-punk,” which is sort of accurate, although mostly just weird and funny.
“We’re indigenous motorboat rock,” said Hoffman. “It’s a combination of, like, old and new. Like indigenous fishing tribes that have adapted to putting motors on their small boats.”
“Yeah, you’re going to want to fact-check that,” added Simes.
So like I said, the members of Color Channel really like each other. And after spending some time with them, I really like them now. And when you go to their show this week and see their enthusiasm as it translates to a live show,
it’s pretty safe to assume you’ll really like them, too.

Do It With Lasers: R&D Experiment Makes Drum Microphones, Triggers More Accurate
Sennheiser Element – Laser Drum Microphone System from Andy Greenwood on Vimeo.
We cover a lot of experiments that make an interesting proof of concept, or that make performance, frankly, more difficult but in interesting ways. Here’s an idea that might just work. You know, like might actually make an existing technology better.
The idea is this: rather than clumsily using gates to isolate individual drum mics, use lasers (“lazorrrs”) to measure vibration. And if the demo video is to be believed, it works damned well. You can use this to get better recordings, or use it to transform a drum into a better MIDI trigger (without just the mics alone), or both. It’s the work of Sennheiser’s California R&D folks.
Sennheiser, you might just want to start adding this to your drum mic kit. (Now, if somehow this could also make a little laser show appear atop the drums when coupled with a smoke machine, a bit like the silly security systems featured in action movies, we’d really be sold.)
Seriously, it’s a good idea. Cooper Newby of Sennheiser USA explains:
Here is our newest Sennheiser R&D prototype. It is a laser that triggers a drum gate or Midi trigger when the drum is hit without applying any pressure to the drum head. It could turn a live drum kit into a totally new instrument by accurately triggering effects or samples along with each specific drum hit. Here is a video demonstrating its live drum mic-ing applications to prevent microphone bleed though.
Thanks, Cooper. I’d love to see this move beyond R&D – or perhaps it’ll inspire other experiments, too.
