Isaac Tichauer x French Express – Free “Take Over You” EP

Generosity and originality – the two founding pillars of French Express. There’s something to be said about an internationally acclaimed label, showcased at festivals, with nothing more than entirely free releases under their belt.

But let’s pull back and highlight Isaac Tichauer. His “Devotion” album last summer marked a new standard and direction for the label, taking a darker approach to their releases. Indeed, one of my colleagues commented on recent releases as having a “druggier” feel to them. Be that as it may, true FE listeners have been greased long enough for the final release of Tichauer’s “Take Over You” EP. Intricate drum patterns and percussion work throughout these 5 tracks all pull together such a crisp sound and intoxicating rhythm.

I’d love to sit here, nit-pick and try to poke holes in this feature release but I’m too stunned by the quality to make an attempt. Besides, I’ll leave that duty to the uppity snobs at Pitchfork.

A sincere thank you to the American-born French Express label for the freebies. Those who are taking notice appreciate and well-support the cause.

MONTEL – White People Can’t Dance

Montel McWilliams stole my heart with a preview of this track a couple weeks ago, before mysteriously pulling it off his soundcloud…only to TOTALLY REDEEM HIMSELF.

To commemorate his 1000th follower on soundcloud, Montel decided to hand over this Eddie Murphy based (and still true) tune about how white people can’t dance. We can’t and we shouldn’t be denying it. I’d dance like the goofiest doof if I heard this come on in virtually any environment. Check up on Montel, too. Very fresh and professional 90s house sound coming from this chap and it makes my bosoms swell with excitement anytime something from him pops up on my news feed.

Who doesn’t love a good Zelda inspired tune? Remixing one of the most iconic songs in videogame history, Nostalgia puts a dubstep flair on a classic: Zelda’s Theme song! I’m not one to enjoy 8bit sounds alongside my dubstep, nor am I one to enjoy the high pitched synths being the majority of the bassline; however, in this case it seems that their appropriate pieces of the melodic puzzle. Brooklyn shuffle in the house!

Leave it to Bit Funk to revive the style behind a melodic house beat. He had been giving the world updates on his works over the past few weeks, claiming something like (and these aren’t exact quotes) “Holy tits, this is the deepest stuff I’ve put together in a while! DaYuM!” Something like that.

But honestly, we love it all the same because we know to expect something near perfect. It’s part of his personality and if you’ve been paying attention, the proof is in the pudding. Drums, percussion and kicks in this free remix for option4 pull together a nice shuffling feel with background harmonics to drive home the chorus. Sabato – The Wizard EP

The Wizard EP is the debut release of British electronic producer Sabato, and I’ve had the pleasure of speaking with Sabato (aka Dan Holmes) about this EP, and also getting to listen to it early. Certain aspects of the release seem reminiscent of other artists: the harmonic melodies remind me of C418; the upbeat funk reminds me of Hot Sugar; the sporadic percussive interjections bring EPROM to mind. But, with all this considered, something deep within the sound is far too unique for comparison, and remains something that I can’t quite explain. Regardless, I just love the spacey tunes and dynamic compositions that this EP has to offer - Apulpye takes you on a slow, thoughtful journey with delightfully plinky-plunky descants, with Blimp  providing a soaring, airy twin to it’s former and, finall y, Arieto, switching things up to a wonky, slightly more upbeat finale. Also below, after the actual music, is a small interview/bio with Sabato, where he reveals the idea behind the name of the release.

I’ve wanted to create electronic music since I realised that you can create pretty much any sound you want with a computer program. I used to be in a band but the process was frustrating. Finding time to rehearse was hard, writing to please every member was hard and booking a studio is expensive. Composing and producing electronic music is liberating in that respect. The title of this EP comes from something my friends and I invented called the Wizard’s Club (if it’s possible to invent painting the walls of a shed and smoking too much weed in it). All the photos on the cover are taken from there, it’s magical.

What artists have influenced you?

I’m influenced by artists like Com Truise, Tycho. Anyrone on the Ghostly label really.

If you could perform with any artist, who would it be?

If I could perform with anyone it would probably be Kelpe. I saw him and Bonobo at the end of last year. The atmosphere was amazing.

What do you think the future holds?

In the future it would be great if I could earn a living from making music. It would be great if I could get paid for doing something I love because then I could do it all day. Although, I’d be tempted to keep my day job and have double-money.

Bristol trio, Forget Me Not, caught our attention with the huge release of Big Tings on their debut Stronger EP. They’ve teamed up with the fledgling sister, Losing Suki and the fellas at XLR8R to give away a brand new one - Faded.

These guys have our full support and making major strides with each and every one of their recent releases. Not a bold prediction, but likely accurate: they’ll have a breakout next few months.

Straight outta British Columbia - Pat Lok. Pressing forward a heavy warehouse sound of nostalgic 90s past, Pat’s kept this track close to his chest for a while. We first heard it on Volta Bureau’s SXSW Mix last week. Like much of his work, Crazy Juice is a song that will stand out in any set.
